Upcoming Experiences

Melbourne Design Week

  • Stoneface Co. is a furniture, lighting, and objects studio based in Toronto, Canada, with select collections produced in Melbourne, Australia. For her Melbourne Design Week debut, founder of Stoneface Co. and internationally awarded designer Jade McDonell presents selected furniture and lighting works.

Long Distance Call reflects the tension and duality of a life lived between two countries. Often navigating time zones and opposite seasons, McDonell finds beauty in liminal spaces. By reimagining a selection of her Canadian permanent collection using Australian materials and production, Stoneface Co. explores diverse Australian identities and the impact of place on design.

The Ostrea Coffee Table, produced in Yackandandah in the Victorian High Country, is made from the rare Australian timber Otway Blackwood. The table’s form is modelled after the Ostrea Edulis, a European oyster with a flat, fan shape. Principles of meditation, repetition and fluidity, served as a starting point for this work.

The Coastal TL lamp features an overlapping shade that draws from the geometry of a sailboat sails. Influenced by sailing culture across the Great Lakes of Canada and Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, the piece reflects a dialogue between distant coastlines.

Join us at the iconic Storehouse in St Kilda, a Concept Gallery featuring art, fashion and furniture thoughtfully curated by Thomas J Burge.

    Designer talk, Sunday May 17th.

  • Jade McDonell walks you through her design process and design influence for Long Distance Call. Shares her learning about rare Australian timbers and producing sustainable and collectible design in North East Victoria - Yackandandah, with talented Australian Carpenter Trent Keller.

WOVEN ‘66

DesignTO 2024

Join Stoneface Co., a Canadian furniture and objects atelier, in the release of their latest work, Woven ‘66. The accent table features the leather weaving technique Intrecciato. When translated to English, Intrecciato means braided; strips of leather are intertwined to create a woven pattern. This technique was made famous by the luxury fashion house Bottega Veneta, founded in 1966; they are renowned for their signature leather weaving technique known as Intrecciato.

In addition Stoneface Co. continues its production of mirrored wall hangings. The Mirage series explores layered realities through collaged photography, texture, and plays on opacity. Patterns derived from the glassy facade of skyscrapers veil natural scenes.

Furniture from the Stoneface Co. permanent collection will accompany these new works.

FLOW STATE / OYSTER TABLE JANUARY 21 - 30

Window Installation In-Person 1097 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1K7

This furniture project explores themes of mindfulness, meditation, and flow in relationship with the designer’s process and the end user’s experience of an object. The exhibition features a large mahogany dining table with abstract repeating shapes and organic lines.

Repetition gives the mind something to focus on, somewhere to pause. Think of a mantra or the rhythm of your breath; the repetition begins to quiet a busy mind. Through the ‘Flow State’ series of furniture, designer Jade McDonell of Stoneface Co. explores what physical characteristics evoke a meditative response. The ‘Oyster’ dining table takes its shape from an oyster’s shell whose ridges radiate outward in a repeating pattern. When sketching designs McDonell uses her pencil, drawing “searching” lines, trying to narrow in on the perfect shape. In this series, McDonell preserved some of those searching or gesturing lines as the final contours of the pieces. Borrowing principles from meditation, mindfulness and flow, she attempts to convey wellness through form.
