ETHOS

Stoneface Co. creates sculptural furniture and art objects in Toronto, Canada and Melbourne, Australia. Our female-led studio creates art-forward pieces in small quantities that focus on exceptional quality and ethical production. With each collection, we are developing a language of style, communicating points of inspiration through bold shapes and timeless natural materials. Our pieces elevate a space with sculptural elements and unexpected forms.

With the art & design collector in mind, all of our pieces come with an artist’s certificate of authenticity. Some work is available in limited edition & we invite commission requests.

JADE MCDONELL
Designer

Materials
Jade works primarily in wood, metal, glass and textile, though she is constantly experimenting with new materials and methods.

Style & Context
Bold shapes, natural materials and contrasting elements characterize her work. She finds inspiration from the interplay between city life and the natural world, particularly water environments and city architecture.

Process
Her love for drawing drives her process. She explores form with hand-drawn repetitive ideations, a combination of imagining in the mind's-eye and experimenting with marks on paper. Once she has teased the form, she'll move to a computer-aided design environment to determine the work's 3D form and realistic scale. Numerous prototypes are constructed in collaboration with herself and craftspeople who specialize in each material; each piece is skillfully assembled by hand.

Background
She is based in Toronto, Canada, and spends part of each year in her second home Melbourne, Australia; she designs and produces work in both cities. As a first-generation Canadian from Chinese-Caribbean and Australian parents, the duality of these cultural influences informs her work & worldview.

She has a BDes from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in Fashion Design & Visual Arts education from TMU, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Ontario College of Art and Toronto Image Works. Experiences and skills gained working and living in New York City under a product designer/architect and as a textile designer led to her pursuit of furniture design and the eventual concept for Stoneface Co.

Jade works under the moniker Stoneface which comes from her namesake Jade (the stone) and represents resolve and determination.
